Razzamatazz
Razzamatazz is raspberry, just like it sounds. It has a strong but deliciously fruity flavor, and it even smelled wonderful. The organic raspberry plant extract hits hard, and you won’t believe how tart and fruity this is.
Death By Chocolate
Kai’s Virgin Vapor Death by Chocolate—also self-explanatory. Death by Chocolate is the best version of chocolate e-juice we’ve tried, principally because it doesn’t taste phony or off. It smells fudgy and faintly of coffee, and it delivers those thick, sweet clouds you want from something dessert-y.
The Jet Set
The Jet Set was a really nice, deep coffee flavor, and actually ended up being the favorite. The solid buzzy coffee taste hits you—and it’s not a latte, it’s a really dark, strong coffee. It smells and tastes delicious and gives a bit of a pick me up as well. Very rich and tasty, and the unexpected favorite!
The bottom line
Kai’s Virgin Vapors offers a middle of the road price for a delicious organic option. It comes in four sizes, and the biggest is the best bargain (only if you love that flavor, of course—but you will). What Are the Standards for Organic E-juice?
The “organic” label for e-juice is required to meet the same standards as other organic substances, such as food. In the United States, organic products must meet certain USDA standards including:
- Products must be grown using certain natural methods.
- They have to be produced using allowed substances.
- They must follow all USDA organic regulations (overseen by a USDA-certified National Organic Program agent).
Here is a closer look at what that all means.
The USDA runs the National Organic Program (NOP). Every seller who wants to bring a product to market using that term must follow the guidelines from NOP, including anyone who sells organic vape juice.
And although USDA certification is really the only way to be sure that something is truly organic, the actual benefits of using organic products remain under debate. Still, by looking at the guidelines, there are certain things we do know: plants certified as organic cannot be grown using chemical herbicides, fertilizers that are not 100 percent natural, insecticides, or pesticides.
Organic vape juices use organic vegetable glycerin (VG) only. This means that they source only organically grown plants for making VG, and that they may use only USDA-approved extraction methods.
Organic vape juices cannot contain additives, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, or synthetic flavorings. To maintain organic certification, each ingredient in the vape juice must be grown and extracted organically.
This includes nicotine, and it’s a big reason why many companies cannot achieve organic certification outside their 0 nic juices. Tobacco is very difficult to grow organically, and it is time-consuming and costly to extract without petroleum-based products.
Because PG is a by-product of petroleum, it is itself synthetic. Vape juices that contain PG cannot be organic—nor can vape juices that contain tobacco extracted in the wrong way.
For all of these reasons, truly organic vape juice is tough to find. You can see why we stuck with the three best on the market—the most delicious that you can really trust to be 100 percent organic.
Why is Diacetyl Free Important?
Diacetyl (DA) is a compound that occurs naturally as beer ferments. However, it has also been synthesized as used as a flavoring agent for “buttered” popcorn and has been linked to popcorn lung in factory workers. It is safe to eat DA, but may be risky to inhale it in large amounts—and many vapers just want to avoid it completely.
All e-juices are not diacetyl-free because although most companies don’t use DA directly as an ingredient, it is a component of some artificial flavorings. Even now, it’s not always clear how different chemical constituents in vape juices behave, especially at high temperatures.
Of course, there’s no question that traditional cigarette smoke is more harmful than even vapor that isn’t organic. But if you’re concerned about what you’re vaping and you want to limit what you’re inhaling, organic vape juices are your safest bet.
What is Organic Vape Juice?
Most organic vape juice contains up to 80 percent vegetable glycerin (VG). Glycerin is a natural compound processed from most types of fat, in this case, fat from vegetable oils. VG is safe for inhalation because it is actually alcohol, although it is made from oil.
VG is clear, non-toxic, and has a sweet taste and smell. It is sometimes used as a food sweetener, and despite years of research, no health problems related to VG have been documented.
The next component of organic vape juice is flavorings in the form of food-grade additives. Only flavorings that are safe for inhalation can be used in vape juice, and sometimes even food-grade additives aren’t, so it’s essential to go only with organic e-juice for vaping.
Most vape juice also contains some sort of nicotine. Freebase nicotine is nicotine in its purest form, and the more traditional form of nicotine found in e juice. Freebase nicotine vape juices usually come at 0mg, 3mg, 6mg, and 12 mg.
Nicotine salts like the ones found in JUUL mimic the nicotine found in the tobacco leaf more closely and offer a smoother, lower temperature vaping experience. They also enable vapers to enjoy higher concentrations of nicotine using cheaper devices—so see that as a plus or a minus, depending on your position. Nicotine salts are also more flavorful and affordable, in most cases.
PG vs VG
We have already explored the differences between PG and VG above, but let’s get into this more here. The biggest myth you will hear in the context of organic vape juice is this: the flavor is no good because PG is a better flavor carrier than VG.
We are here to tell you, this is a myth. VG can work just as well for flavors—but only if you do them right. That’s why we chose these three brands. Here’s what we mean.
VG is typically made from coconut, soybean, palm, and flaxseed oils. PG is petroleum based. But how would we test how well they hold and deliver flavor?
Some research does exist. In fact, a 2018 study found that users vaping the same flavorings in e-liquids could not taste differences between higher PG or VG content. In other words, in a blind taste test, Pepsi challenge style, people really can’t tell whether an e-liquid has more or less PG or VG in it, so long as the flavoring is identical.
So here’s an idea: we might be thinking PG has more flavor because it’s cheaper and easier for companies to use. Just an idea. Because to achieve great flavor with VG, it’s true: it takes some effort.
The actual differences between PG and VG have much more to do with chemical and physical properties, and they result in differences in the way the vaping experience feels. For example, if your hits are harsher or smoother, or your clouds are thicker or thinner—these kinds of things can be affected by the PG/VG issue.
On the other hand, research has shown that PG vape juices are actually more likely to be harsh. They are also more likely to induce an allergy—although uncommon.
Is Organic Vape Juice Worth It?
Organic produce has been taking off lately because of the potential health benefits that come from ingesting higher quality food. The verdict is still up for debate when it comes to organic e-liquid, however. There haven’t been enough tests done on organic e-juice to determine if it’s more beneficial than using the cheap stuff.
The main downside with organic e-juice (or organic anything, for that matter) is the cost. Obtaining the necessary certifications, lab inspections, and all the other necessary steps don’t come cheap. That cost gets passed on to the consumer.
The debate really comes down to personal preference (just like everything else in the world of vaping). If you value organic products and don’t want to take the risk that comes with vaping non-organic products, then that extra cost may be worth it for you. If you’re the type of person who thinks that organic products are pointless or if you think that they aren’t worth the extra cash, then you might want to stick with non-organic e-liquid.
